Seen from a rare aerial angle, the Donaldson Sales Suite stands with near-perfect symmetry in Edinburgh’s West Coates neighborhood, its dark stone façade anchored by formal gardens and broad lawns. Copper-domed towers and crenellated walls give the structure a fortress-like presence, softened by the muted greens of the surrounding grounds and the low, cloudy sky. The building was completed in 1856 and was originally constructed as Donaldson’s Hospital, a pioneering school dedicated to the education of deaf children. Today, it forms part of the Donaldson’s redevelopment and serves as a sales suite and residential complex of high-end apartments. From above, the building feels both monumental and orderly, a Victorian institution reshaped for modern living without losing its gravity.
