The capital of Malta, Valletta overlooks the impressive Grand Harbour and the Marsamxett Harbour, and is a city of ancient charm. Valletta is famed for its grand churches, elegant palaces and grand limestone fortifications. The city has historic Arabic connections, Sicillian inspired cuisine and a British atmosphere. Named after the leader of the Order of St. John, Jean Parisot de la Vallette, the Order proceeded to construct Renaissance and baroque palaces, churches and hospices characteristic of the 16th century within the city walls. Valletta has many interesting museums, and the nearby towns of Sliema and St Julians, are packed with restaurants and bars.
