Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the second city of Byzantium and of modern Greece. Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Venetians have all left their legacy and architectural mark on this city. The 5th century mosaics in the Church of St Demetrius, are one of the masterpieces of early Christian art. The city boasts many Byzantine churches and Roman ruins. Thessaloniki has shopping to rival Athens, fine restaurants and a lively café scene and nightlife. Tavernas abound Plateia Athonos, cafés and bars line Leoforos Nikis and Modiano market is wonderful for fruit and vegetables.
