Riga is the cosmopolitan capital of Latvia and a secret treasure of the Baltic region. The city is a treasure trove of art nouveau architecture and boasts over 750 buildings built in this style. After joining the Hanseatic League, ships from all the leagues cities, England and the Netherlands came to Riga to trade in furs, timber, honey and especially amber. The Anglican Church of the Holy Saviour built in 1859 bears witness to the importance of trade with the British Empire. Buckets of earth were brought into Riga from England so that the foundations could rest on British soil. Old Riga is a fairytale city of winding narrow streets offering basement nightclubs, bars, restaurants and cafès.
