Quebec city is one of the oldest communities on the American continent and is almost entirely French speaking. Overlooking the St. Lawrence River on the cliffs of Cap Diamant, the city is the seat of regional government, and the heart of French-Canadian nationalism. The cities historical importance, European ambience and architecture all contributed to it being named a World Heritage Site in 1985. The oldest part of the city is Basse-Ville, or the Lower Town, with its many winding staircases, narrow lanes, bars and caf├Ęs.
