Manaus is the capital of the Amazonas state in northern Brazil. The sprawling jungle metropolis is situated on the Rio Negro some 10km upstream from its confluence with the Rio Solimoes, beyond which the mighty Amazon River starts. Manaus has often been called the `Paris of the Tropics´ because of the wonderful eclectic architecture from the past when the city was  a rubber boom town. The international port is situated some 1500 km from the mouth of the Amazon. The city has been declared a free trade zone, which has led to the development of new factories, high-rise towers and a modern infrastructure.
