Kaliningrad was originally named Königsberg in German and is an historic city that was founded in 1255 by order of Teutonic Knights. During the cold war era the city was closed to foreign visitors because it was the headquarters of the Soviet Baltic Fleet.
The city has an interesting mix of old, historic and modern buildings and houses some fine museums, monuments and galleries. Kaliningrad has its own brands of beer and vodka which are famous in the region, and many new restaurants have opened that offer culinary specialities of East Prussia like the Königsberger Klopse.
