India

The south Asian country of India lies on a peninsula surrounded by the Indian Ocean. The country is vast and the landscape is very diverse and rugged. The major rivers that drain the country are the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra and their tributaries. The western area is the Thar Desert, and in the north lie the great Himalaya, Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountain ranges. The climate ranges from very cold in the Himalaya to tropical heat over much of the south. Agriculture, forestry and fishing is an important factor in the economy. India is a major world producer of tea, sugar, jute, cotton and tobacco. The manufacturing sector is large and diverse, and include chemicals, software, pharmaceuticals, iron and steel. India has the second largest population in the world, and over seventy per cent live in rural areas. The capital of India is Delhi.
